The Unexpected.....

All my life I have been obsessed with the Asian culture. My first interests were with the Japanese language. To this day I still spend most of my time watching various anime and reading select manga.  A few years ago I got caught up in K-pop, thus causing me to fall completely in love with Korean. Early last year I tried to pursue learning the Korean language. Events in my life happened and I had to put my studies on hiatus for a while.

A good friend of mine, Scott, was learning Chinese at the same time. Every week me and two other friends would meet up for Bible Studies and he would force us to practice with him. I had no interests in learning the language.

June of 2012, we heard there was a small class for Chinese at one of our local Kingdom Halls. Scott, Ashley, and Jeffrey started to attend. I began to feel left out so I started joining the classes too. Much to my surprise, I fell in love with is as well. Two months went by before we received word that we were able to meet regularly as a group at the Kingdom Hall. This would mean we would be able to have public talks and Bible discussions in Chinese. Along with Scott, I switched from the English congregation into the Chinese immediately. I figured, I was already learning the language and doing well, what was stopping me from participating in the Chinese Ministry.

The whole process was unexpected, but completely worth while..... This blog is devoted to my journey in learning Chinese.

Our adventures in Puerto Rico

Caitlyn and I decided a few weeks ago that the theme song for our lives was 'I lived' by One Republic. For many months we had been busy researching places to go visit at the beginning of 2015. We thought of Argentina, Dominican Republic, Belize, but we ultimately picked Puerto Rico for many reasons.  This would be my first time leaving the country, so it would probably be better to have gone some place close in case something happened.  Also Caitlyn had family that lived in Puerto Rico that cut down the amount of money we would spend.  We are broke need-greater pioneers of course.  So this is our adventure: Day One Naturally we count the traveling as part of the trip.  We had plane tickets for February 16 flying out of Charlotte at 10:10 pm.  Winter storm Octavia had other plans for us.  Back in the summer for our Chinese convention our plane was cancelled twice and we are starting to see a pattern. ~The Joys of Pioneer School... Or Not...

Living with a Mental Illness, or multiple rather, you learn that things in life are just beyond your control. It makes the challenges you face ten times more difficult. Unfortunately, I suffer from Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Anxiety, and Social Anxiety. I also suffer from Chronic Pain (an un diagnosed  illness, currently pending). Every single day is a fight for my life. In the past six years of being in the Chinese field, my conditions have only grown worse.   My main goal for my blog is to encourage others, so please don’t think of this post as a pity party. On To Bigger and Better Things~

Many people in the foreign language field decide to move on to bigger and better things. It's like catching a fever. Once you realize that there is so much more out there than just what's in your thirty mile radius, your goals start evolving. It's called becoming a Need Greater. Only in the past few years this term was coined by the Branch.  I have mentioned before, that working in a foreign field is almost equal to being a missionary without leaving your current city (situations vary). The SC Chinese group has the whole state, and even some of Georgia, for their territory. That is more than enough to keep us busy, right? But for some people, it still isn't enough. And for those preaching in the Chinese field, the fever is very contagious. Listening to experiences of those who leave the United States to live in another land fuel our hunger, to the point that being an at home missionary is just not enough.
